About Stephen Huey
Stephen and his wife Stephanie both graduated from Rice University in Houston and their four children have been growing up in the 18th district of Texas since they were born. As a dedicated father and small business owner, Stephen intimately understands the needs of families and workers, and will advocate for policies that enable people to care for their children and have fulfilling work that pays the bills.
After spending the first several years of his childhood in Texas, Stephen’s family moved overseas when his parents began serving as missionaries for over 20 years in the West African countries of Nigeria and Ghana. Their Christian faith and selfless attitude in serving others have made a profound impact on him. Stephen lived in three different places in Nigeria, and each region was unique since Nigeria has so many different cultures and languages. One of the most memorable things from his time there is how Nigerians are undaunted by many hardships they face. “No condition is permanent” is a popular phrase Nigerians encourage one another with to optimistically keep moving forward, believing the future has better possibilities no matter what challenges you are facing today.
Stephen returned to the United States to major in computer science at Rice University, and he is grateful for the financial aid which made it possible for him to attend. Due to his passion for literature and teaching, he also took over 20 credits of literature courses and completed all the education classes required for being certified to teach high school English except for the final student teaching practicum. Stephen got busy with other endeavors after college, but has always considered returning to that someday.
Stephen has 20 years of experience in creating innovative technology in nimble healthcare and fintech software startups, the largest bank in the nation, and multiple energy companies. He was the first software engineer employee and a key player in a healthcare startup whose solution was used by hospital systems around the country before it was acquired at an extraordinarily high valuation. Later he served as the CTO of a financial software startup that was also acquired. The most important driver of success in his career has been understanding the needs of the people whose problems he has solved.
In one of the energy companies Stephen worked for, he served in a particularly challenging and highly visible role to bridge the divide between a new innovation group building next-generation solutions and other parts of the company whose services and expertise were needed to complete the projects. These different sides of the company were often publicly at odds with one another, and Stephen worked through many challenging compromises between the various groups to get the projects over the finish line fast enough to keep up with an aggressive roadmap.
Stephen has volunteered as an ESL teacher, a mentor at Hogg Middle School, and also as a Junior Achievement teacher at Jack Yates High School. He has also served for over a dozen years on the board of a local child placement agency. His faith is important to him and he has served at his church by helping with the youth and leading small groups. As a proud Rice Owl, he has for many years volunteered to interview high school students applying to Rice University.
A wise man once urged us to humbly consider others more important than ourselves and put their interests before our own, and Stephen believes that an important part of getting things done in Washington is building bridges on both sides of the aisle in order to meet the needs of our district. Stephen is not a career politician, so he brings a fresh perspective to Congress, and will apply his expertise in breaking down challenges and collaborating with others in order to benefit the 18th district of Texas.
